What Is Same-Day ACH?

Same-day settlement instead of the standard 1–3 business day cycle

Same-day ACH is a NACHA-enabled service that allows ACH originators to submit payment files for settlement within the same business day, rather than the standard next-day or 2-day ACH settlement cycle. Introduced by NACHA in 2016 and expanded through subsequent phases, same-day ACH now supports both debits and credits up to $1,000,000 per transaction.

Standard ACH operates on a batch processing model with overnight settlement — a debit submitted Monday typically settles Tuesday or Wednesday. Same-day ACH compresses that timeline to within the same business day, using three processing windows provided by the Federal Reserve’s FedACH and the Clearing House’s EPN network.

For MCA funders running daily debit schedules, credit repair companies billing recurring subscribers, and any business where cash flow timing is operationally critical, same-day ACH eliminates the float between origination and settlement. GoACH supports same-day ACH for all eligible transaction types, with automatic routing to the appropriate processing window based on your file submission time.

Important: Same-day ACH is available for both debits and credits, but not all transaction types are eligible. International ACH transactions (IAT) and transactions over $1,000,000 are excluded. GoACH’s platform automatically identifies eligible same-day transactions and routes them accordingly.

Why Same-Day ACH Matters

What changes when your ACH settles the same day

The operational impact of same-day ACH depends heavily on your business model. For some businesses it’s a convenience. For others — particularly MCA funders and high-volume recurring billers — it’s a cash flow necessity.

Eliminates settlement float for MCA funders
MCA funders collect daily repayments from merchant accounts. With standard ACH, Tuesday’s collections don’t settle until Wednesday or Thursday. Same-day ACH compresses this to same-day, enabling same-day redeployment of capital into new advances.

Faster payroll and vendor disbursement
Same-day ACH credits allow businesses to pay employees or vendors with same-day funds availability, replacing wire transfers for time-sensitive disbursements at a fraction of the cost.

Faster return identification
Same-day ACH returns are identified faster — typically within the same business day. For MCA funders managing large portfolios of daily debits, faster return identification allows faster retry decisions and reduces exposure.

Competitive advantage for time-sensitive collections
For debt settlement and collections businesses, same-day ACH enables faster resolution of payment arrangements. When a consumer commits to a same-day payment, you can confirm settlement the same day rather than waiting 1–2 business days.

Lower cost than wire transfers
Domestic wire transfers typically cost $15–25 per transaction. Same-day ACH achieves comparable speed for time-sensitive payments at a fraction of that cost, making it the practical replacement for wires in most business payment scenarios.

API and automation-ready
GoACH’s API supports programmatic same-day ACH origination with automatic window routing. Connect your AI agent or internal system to trigger same-day debits and credits directly, with webhook notifications on settlement status.

Industries

Who benefits most from same-day ACH processing

Same-day ACH has the highest operational impact in industries where settlement timing directly affects cash flow, portfolio management, or customer experience.

Same-day settlement of daily merchant repayments allows MCA funders to redeploy capital the same day it’s collected. For funders running active portfolios, this eliminates 1–2 days of float per debit cycle — compounding significantly across a large book.
Same-day ACH for monthly subscription billing reduces the gap between a successful debit and confirmed funds availability, improving cash flow predictability for subscription-based credit services.
When a consumer commits to a payment arrangement, same-day ACH allows settlement confirmation the same day — improving resolution rates and reducing the window for stop payments.
Same-day ACH for collection agencies processing phone-authorized payments (TEL) enables same-day confirmation, reducing the friction between a committed payment and actual settlement.

Common Questions

Same-day ACH FAQ

Can ACH be processed the same day?
Yes. NACHA introduced same-day ACH in 2016, and it’s now available for both debits and credits through all ACH processors that support it. Same-day ACH uses three processing windows per business day — with cutoffs at 10:30 AM, 2:45 PM, and 4:45 PM ET — to settle payments within the same business day. GoACH supports same-day ACH for eligible transactions, with automatic routing to the earliest available window based on your file submission time.
What is the same-day ACH limit?
As of March 2020, the per-transaction limit for same-day ACH is $1,000,000. This limit applies per individual ACH entry. There is no NACHA-imposed daily volume limit, though individual processors (including GoACH) may set processing limits based on underwriting. Prior to March 2020, the limit was $100,000 per transaction — the increase to $1,000,000 significantly expanded same-day ACH’s applicability for B2B payments.
What are the same-day ACH cutoff times?
There are three same-day ACH processing windows per business day, based on FedACH Eastern Time schedules. Window 1: submit by 10:30 AM ET, settle by 1:00 PM ET. Window 2: submit by 2:45 PM ET, settle by 5:00 PM ET. Window 3 (credits only): submit by 4:45 PM ET, settle by 6:00 PM ET. Files submitted after the 2:45 PM ET cutoff (for debits) will process next-day. GoACH automatically routes your file to the earliest available window based on when it’s submitted.
How much does same-day ACH cost?
Same-day ACH pricing varies by processor. Most ACH processors charge a small premium over standard ACH processing — typically a few cents per transaction above the standard ACH rate. This compares favorably to wire transfers, which cost $15–25 per transaction. GoACH’s same-day ACH pricing is structured based on processing volume and account type. Contact our team for current pricing specific to your business.
Can I expedite an ACH transfer that’s already been submitted?
No — once an ACH file has been submitted and accepted by the originating bank, it cannot be expedited to same-day processing. Same-day ACH must be designated at origination, before the file is submitted. To use same-day ACH, your processor must support it and you must submit your file before the applicable cutoff time. GoACH supports same-day origination through our API and virtual terminal — contact our team to enable same-day ACH on your account.
Is same-day ACH available for high-risk businesses?
Yes, through GoACH. Standard processors may restrict same-day ACH access for high-risk verticals, but GoACH provides same-day ACH processing for merchant cash advance, credit repair, debt settlement, collections, and other high-risk industries. Same-day ACH accounts for high-risk businesses include the same return rate monitoring, reserve structures, and compliance controls as standard ACH accounts. What transaction types are not eligible for same-day ACH?
Two transaction types are ineligible for same-day ACH under NACHA rules: International ACH Transactions (IAT) — cross-border payments — cannot use the same-day ACH network. And transactions over $1,000,000 per entry exceed the same-day ACH transaction limit. All standard domestic SEC codes (CCD, PPD, WEB, TEL) are eligible for same-day ACH for transactions at or below the limit. Learn more about SEC codes →
